What Is a Boodle Fight? The Filipino Feast, Explained

Banana leaves down the middle of the table, rice piled the whole length, everyone eating with their hands. Here is what a boodle fight is, where it comes from, and how to order one in Al Barsha.

A boodle fight is a Filipino communal feast. The table is lined with banana leaves, rice is spread down the centre, and grilled meat, seafood and vegetables are piled on top. There are no plates and no cutlery. Everyone stands or sits shoulder to shoulder and eats with their hands, a style of eating called kamayan.

Where the name comes from

The format comes from the Philippine Military Academy, where cadets ate together this way. Boodle was academy slang for shared food, and the fight was the rush when the signal to eat was given. The tradition moved from the mess hall into family celebrations, and it is now the standard way Filipinos mark a birthday, a despedida or a salary-day gathering with the barkada.

What is actually on the leaves

There is no fixed recipe, and that is the point. A seafood boodle is built for the table it is feeding. Ours is a seafood spread served with unlimited rice and iced lemon tea, and it comes in four sizes.

How to eat kamayan style

  • Wash your hands first. Every boodle place brings water and soap, and so do we.
  • Use your fingertips, not your palm. Press a small ball of rice, top it, and push it onto your thumb.
  • Claim the section of leaf in front of you. Reaching across the table is how you lose friends.
  • The person who ordered eats last in some families and first in others. Settle it before the food arrives.

Ordering a boodle fight in Al Barsha

Message us before you come, especially for the four and six person spreads, so the kitchen can build it fresh. Same-day is usually fine. Our room seats groups and Google lists us as good for groups, which is what a boodle table needs: space, and nobody watching the clock.

Six of our Google reviewers mention the boodle fight by name. It is the highest-value spread on our menu and the thing we would tell you to order for any celebration of more than two people.
